Joey Wright has made a full-time career out of doing what he loves — swimwear photography. Now he’s ready to share his knowledge during this intimate, intensive, on-location 3-day workshop.

Joey will cover the full gamut of his swimwear photography tips & tricks including pre-production, shooting models on location, and post-production. Each student will work 1-on-1 with agency models on the beautiful beaches of Miami, while enjoying the comfort of a small group setting to learn, grow, and walk away with an updated portfolio. We’ve also have a special guest speaker, 1-on-1 portfolio reviews, and group hangouts to make this Workshop as much about community as it is about learning.

Total Seats

If you lack access to a studio or crave more than shooting indoors, it’s essential that you obtain the ability to shoot on location while taking significant control of a seemingly uncontrollable environment. This Workshop will provide you with the tools and methods necessary to tackle your own location shoots with confidence while relying on taste and problem-solving rather than worrying about camera settings or having the best gear.

If you’re a novice, you’ll go home prepared to take your portfolio to the next level where you’ll stop reaching out to models because they’ll be reaching out to you. If you’re already at that level, you’ll leave much closer to turning your hobby into a career. Still not you, or already in career mode? Then let’s get you ready for the higher expectations that come with bigger clients and greater paychecks. In other words, this Workshop is aimed toward all levels of photographers looking to improve the finer details of their outdoor game.

This Workshop is not a mass shootout with a bunch of photographers bumping shoulders for half-decent snapshots of a model who isn’t sure where to look. Instead, you’ll shoot each model 1-on-1 and walk away with images that deserve your watermark alone! The Workshop is geared toward those who simply want to produce better pictures on-location — whether working with experienced models or new faces.

Our past students have provided us with constructive feedback and we have listened. Below are some of those changes we’ve made compared to previous years:

  1. After having a 2-day format for the first two years, we’ve expanded to 3 in order to spread out classroom discussion while allowing more time for group discussions, individual questions and getting to know your peers.
  2. After years one and two, we expanded the model count from three to four while making our groups smaller (4 students per model instead of 5). This allows more shooting time per student while providing each student with greater image variety.
  3. While shooting on location, we’re adding an experienced moderator to each group to help with questions while ensuring that everyone is following our shoot guidelines and getting the help they need.
  4. We’ve added a segment where Joey will shoot live & uninterrupted in front of the students as he would in the field so you can see exactly how he works with models.
  5. We’ve added extra mingling and social time (lunches, dinners, etc.) to grant students more opportunity to bond and pick each others brains as well as Joey’s.
  6. Each student will partake in a 10 minute 1-on-1 portfolio review with Joey on the last day.
  7. We’ve invited a guest speaker from a top Miami modeling agency to take questions from the students regarding working with agencies and their models.
  8. The retouching lecture has been condensed and updated with new tips & tricks. Joey will also accept retouching challenges submitted in advance by the students.

  • Note: You can get away with any lens that will give you a focal length of 50mm or more with a maximum aperture between f/1.2 and f/4
  • HoodLoupe(suggested but not required)

Location permits

If you’re flying in, Miami International Airport (MIA) will get you closest to the Workshop. We will be shooting at two different beautiful beach locations in Key Biscayne. A car rental shouldn’t be necessary since you can easily Uber or take a cab from the airport to the hotel. We’ll provide group transportation when moving from the hotel’s classroom to the beach and vice-versa.

The classroom portion of the Workshop will be held at Homewood Suites by Hilton – Miami, located minutes from Key Biscayne.

How many models will I get to work with?
On the second day of the workshop, each student will be placed into groups of four (four groups total) as we head to our Sunrise Shoot beach location. Each group will be teamed up with a model and each student will shoot for 10-minutes uninterrupted. While shooting, students can request assistance from their other group members, group moderator or Joey (to help with lighting, reflectors, etc).

After one hour, each student will have had a turn and the groups will rotate to the next shooting station with a different model. By the end of the Sunrise Shoot, each student will have worked with all four models in four different scenes. We then break for lunch before heading to a second beach location for our Sunset Shoot. You’ll repeat the same rotation at the new location with the models wearing different swimwear. By the end of the day, you’ll have shot each model twice while never repeating a location, scene, or swimsuit.

I really want to save my seat, but I can’t swing the full Workshop fee now–Can I put down a deposit?
You sure can! We understand that the Workshop is a big (but important) investment, so to make it easier on you, you can pay half of the total fee as a deposit for your seat, which comes out to $975. Please note that because of the work needed to book the event, we’ll need your seat paid in full 30 days prior to the Workshop.

Is there a refund/cancellation policy?
Because our event is small and our models & permits are booked in advance based on the number of attendees, refunds will not be issued. With that said, your seat is transferable so you are welcome to give or sell it to another photographer!

What if it rains?
The workshop dates have been chosen based upon historically sunny weather. But no matter what, the show must go on and we will do everything we can to produce a great workshop!

Will Joey be hosting any other workshops in the future?
The success of each workshop determine the planning of future workshops. With that said, Joey plans to host at least one workshop per year.

Are there any events happening in Miami on Saturday & Sunday in case I would like to extend my visit?
Check out www.miamiandbeaches.com to find out what else is happening in the area.

Our home base will be the Homewood Suites by Hilton – Miami (1750 Southwest 1st Avenue, Miami, FL 33129), where Joey and his team will be staying and hosting the pre-workshop dinner, daily breakfast & lunch, classroom lectures, guest speaker, and portfolio reviews. The hotel will also serve as our main meeting point for shuttling to our shoot locations. Click here to book a room at a special group rate of $149/night for a king and $159/night for a double. Valet parking will be discounted for our group at a rate of $18/overnight or $10/day if you’re not staying at the hotel. You’ll want to check in on the 11th and check out no earlier than the 14th of April.

Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided on all three days so you’ll only need a little extra cash for dinner. Thursday and Friday evening, we’ll shuttle the group to Wynwood, Miami’s popular Design District, where you’ll have some great food options and time to hang with Joey and your peers.

Our shoots will take place on the beautiful and unique beaches of Key Biscayne. If you haven’t had the pleasure of visiting, you’ll be in for a treat! These iconic beaches have served as the backdrop for countless high-end productions including the Victoria’s Secret catalog and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.

If you are considering this class, please take it from me that it is worth every penny! I’m a wedding photographer, but swimsuit photography was always intriguing to me. Joey knows his stuff and showed the inner workings of how to get his shots. He also doesn’t hold back from sharing and showed us how he shoots, lights, communicates with the models, culls, retouches, and even how he presents his work to clients. Apart from being a great instructor, Joey is a very nice and funny guy. The 2-day workshop was very fun and I would definitely do it again!

Taking Joey’s class was the best investment I have made in a long time... I left inspired and filled with confidence! Joey approaches his photography in a simple and pragmatic way. He is a humble guy that has patience and genuine respect for and interest in his student's work and personal progress. I took so many things away from this class although I especially enjoyed his approach to retouching which, in my opinion, is pure genius. I would absolutely recommend his class to any level of photographer. I am glad to have met Joey and take away so much more than I ever expected!

Not only is Joey an amazingly talented and successful photographer—he is an amazing teacher and mentor. His tips, concepts, techniques and workflow - from dealing with clients to post-processing gave me an incredibly strong foundation to take my photography to another level. He literally walks you through posing techniques and how you talk and give feedback to the model. Honestly, Joey is simply the best... with his design background and Photoshop experience, he really reaches the most amazing final images, which you can clearly see in his work.

I wanted to learn how to produce a photoshoot from start to finish in order to get the same results as Joey … Mission Accomplished! Joey has a real knack for breaking down [the process] in easy-to-digest chunks of information, which helped us to take action quickly and easily. Teaching us to figure out how to create our own set…was something I’ve never experienced before in past workshops and I loved it. His team was fully committed to providing us with the best experience possible, while making those moments unforgettable!

My experience with Joey Wright’s workshop was outstanding. Never in my life have I found a highly skilled photographer that I can relate to—it is not just about his approachable personality, but also his professionalism and passion for sharing his knowledge. The things I struggled with most in photography were communication and posing. Joey was able to break things down with a few key tricks to help me overcome these obstacles.
